⚓ Historic Harbour Highlights
The cruise passes some of the V&A Waterfront’s most interesting maritime landmarks, including the SAS Somerset, the world’s only remaining boom defence vessel.
You’ll also see the Bascule Bridge, the southern hemisphere’s largest synchro-lift and the only drawbridge of its kind, as well as the historic Clock Tower, Chavonnes Battery Museum and Nelson Mandela Gateway.
🏛️ A Glimpse into Cape Town’s History
Built in 1941, the SAS Somerset was originally known as Ship No. 280 and later served at the busy fishing area of Saldanha Bay. Today, the historic vessel is permanently harboured at the V&A Waterfront as a museum ship.
The iconic Clock Tower, built in 1882, originally served as the Port Captain’s Office, while the Bascule Bridge connects the waterfront area with the Clock Tower. Before the bridge was built, dockworkers and sailors crossed this section of the harbour using the Penny Ferry, a small rowing boat.
